LEGALITY BY COUNTRY

Where Wikipedia lists Lethwei as legal, as of 2022.

3 min readUpdated: 2026-10

Lethwei's legal status is hard to summarise, and we have only one sourced country list. Wikipedia states that, because of its violent ruleset, Lethwei is difficult to sanction and is illegal in most countries outside Myanmar, and that as of 2022 it is legal only in the countries below. Laws change and this list is dated 2022; nothing on this page is legal advice. The badges below mean only that a country appears on that list. The list's supporting citation is a news item titled “New Zealand To Become The 10th Country To Host Pro Lethwei Fight”, which supports that professional fights have been hosted, not that a statute permits them. Wikipedia also states that the World Lethwei Federation has the responsibility to sanction and support the sport outside Myanmar.

What to do if your country is not listed

This page cannot tell you that Lethwei is legal, or illegal, anywhere that is not listed above: we have no sourced information on any other country, and the list itself is dated 2022. Wikipedia states that Lethwei is illegal in most countries outside Myanmar. Before you plan a bout, a class or an event:

  1. Identify your national, state or provincial combat-sport regulator.
  2. Ask it, in writing, whether bareknuckle boxing is sanctioned.
  3. Ask separately whether headbutts are permitted under any ruleset.
  4. Keep its answer, and the date you received it.

For gym owners and promoters: take advice from a lawyer who specialises in combat-sport law before running any event, and ask your insurer in writing whether your policy covers the contact involved.
