Flyweight

Bantamweight
Where technical pressure fighters often emerge. The 6-pound jump from flyweight increases knockout potential measurably, and the bantamweight clinch game is among the most refined in the sport.

Featherweight
The marquee weight for technical Myanmar fighters. At this weight, southpaw counter-strikers have historically dominated because the speed differential makes timing-based finishes possible in ways the heavier classes don't allow.

Lightweight
The crowd-pleaser division. The combination of speed, power, and durability at lightweight produces the most consistently watchable bouts on a typical card. Clinch knees become genuinely dangerous; headbutts gain real stopping power.
→ Too Too's lightweight reign in the 2000s defined sandpit-era violence; Lone Chaw's modern lightweight title carries the Karen technical lineage forward.
Welterweight
The international crossroads. Most foreign fighters who arrive in Myanmar walk around at welterweight or middleweight, so this is the division where the most cross-cultural bouts have happened. Kyar Ba Nyein himself fought welterweight at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

Middleweight
The first weight at which one clean strike can end a fight regardless of technical execution. Saw Gyi-style headbutt finishes are most common in this range — the mass behind a frontal headbutt at 160 pounds is genuinely concussive.

Light Heavyweight
A tier where Myanmar fighters historically thinned out and international fighters became more common. The balance shifts toward conditioning at this weight — fighters who can maintain pressure across all rounds tend to defeat better technicians who cannot.

Cruiserweight
The WLC-specific division between light heavy and openweight. Created to give Dave Leduc and similar-sized international fighters a sanctioned platform that didn't require giving up size to Myanmar openweights.

Heavyweight
Rare in Lethwei. Most Myanmar fighters never reach this weight, and the division exists primarily for international invitational matchups. Bouts at this weight are short and decisive — there is little technical filigree once both fighters have 200+ pounds of body mass behind their strikes.

Openweight
The most prestigious and historically significant Lethwei division. The Openweight Golden Belt is considered pound-for-pound supreme and has been contested between fighters with significant size differentials throughout the sport's history. Old-school Lethwei was always openweight by default — the codified divisions are a 20th-century addition.
